On Friday we set off from the Car Park at Mellor Church to stunning views across Manchester and further afield. We viewed Mellor Church, The beautiful Memorial Gardens and Bottoms Hall (The Former home of Samuel Oldknow a Mill owner from Stockport) This was the start of our steady climb up the bridle path to Mellor Cross, which is actually a great big ‘T’ at the moment due to storm damage in 2015. We then visited the Cross and had a look at some old photos of the questionable Health and Safety from when it was erected in 1970.
We continued on past Paradise cottage and over towards Kinder Scout before turning away passing Broadhurst Edge Wood and onto Shiloh Road before heading back to the start and the site of the Iron Age Hill Fort that was discovered by Mellor Church in the 1990s’. The weather was absolutely wonderful for walking. We covered 9km and climbed a total of 280m.
Here is a review of the walk that Carol kindly left on Facebook.
“The sun was out and a perfect spot in Mellor to start our 3 hour leisurely walk. Tim made sure we all had water and sunscreen before setting out.
This was my first long walk with a lovely group of friendly people and we were soon chatting and getting to know each other.
We took in some amazing scenery over Mellor and beyond. Tim gave some interesting historical facts along the way. The terrain was good with some slight hills but nothing too tasking.!
An enjoyable morning walk! ”
Our next Longer Adventure Walk is Saturday 30th June
